Homage to Botticelli’s Primavera
I have always loved Botticelli’s work especially “Primavera” which means “spring” in english. I made the frame a few years ago and started 2 paintings within the frame. Nothing worked. I would sand off the surface and start again and again. I let it sit and collect dust until the idea came. The motivation came about 2 weeks ago on a lovely sunny day. I thought of “spring” and “Primavera”. Primavera, yes. I decided to interpret the figures in a cubistic style to emphasize the movement of the dancing figures. I documented the process and things moved swiftly. I used acrylic at first and some surfaces required a more opaque paint. I then painted with oil on top of the underpainting. Gold leaf was the perfect cover for this piece. Hope you enjoy the step by step photos.
